The Learning Centre is on the pathway to becoming an independent school following over ten years of delivering a specialist alternative provision in the Basingstoke and North Hampshire area. Oversees a secondary age provision, the Learning Centre, and a post-16 specialist college in Hook. Main responsibilities Teach Science to groups of learners from all abilities across years 7 11 Lead on the creation of schemes of work to meet the curriculum requirements Ensure that all lessons are planned with clear aims and objectives Develop relationships with learners in order to support their needs Engage and encourage learners to participate in learning To encourage and foster intellectual curiosity Differentiate tasks and strategies to provide bespoke support for a variety of needs Support learners to progress towards personal and academic goals and targets Work as part of a team to incorporate agreed strategies in supporting mental health and SEND and meeting the individual needs of learners To encourage all learners to be actively engaged in their own learning and in reviewing their progress against targets Maintain registers, evaluations, academic and SEMH progress monitoring (and other records as necessary) To encourage all learners to be actively engaged in their own learning and in reviewing their progress against targets Attend all session briefings and meetings with Head/Assistant Head and staff to keep up to date with individual learner progress Attend all safeguarding and child protection training and be aware of procedures at all times To ensure that all lessons are delivered in line with the departmental schemes of work and school policies To check that all subject matter is effectively communicated and understood by all groups of learners To set appropriate learning tasks and challenges and ensure that it is regularly marked with constructive feedback To ensure that there is a high standard of display work in the laboratory, which is changed frequently To keep work areas tidy and organised to promote safety in the laboratory To keep well up to date with health and safety issues through regular checking on CLEAPSS To ensure that all experiments are trialled beforehand and risk assessment used with all experimental work Adhere to all policies Person specification Experience Qualified teacher status (or (Level 4 or 5 Education and Training) Successful teaching experience Experience of applying safeguarding and child protection policies and procedures Experience in embedding latest research in education, mental health and young people Interest in keeping up with the latest research in education, mental health and young people Awareness of factors impacting on and issues facing vulnerable children and young people and families (e.g. disadvantage, poverty, disability, mental health) Knowledge of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children Knowledge and experience of supporting mental health needs Knowledge and experience of SEND and Quality First Teaching Knowledge of learning strategies and behaviour management and experience in planning and implementing Abilities Ability to listen to and communicate effectively with children and young people Ability to build trusting relationships with young people conducive to a learning environment A passion for Science Ensuring outstanding outcomes for learners Motivating and enthusing learners Working collaboratively with staff Ability to plan and sequence the curriculum What we offer our staff An approachable leadership team that prioritises staff wellbeing by providing 1-1 supervision and support for all staff Excellent support and extensive opportunities for professional development Awarded a Carnegie Gold Award for our commitment to mental health and wellbeing for our staff and learners A commitment to a healthy work/life balance as part of our Mental Health Strategy and ensuring work does not need to be completed at home or on weekends Enabling teachers and tutors to focus on teaching and planning Offering flexibility and adaptability Opportunities to build personalised relationships with learners to enable them to progress academically, emotionally and socially Additional Information To undertake other duties as reasonably deemed appropriate by the Head of Learning Centre This document will form the focus for Performance Management and will be integral in any subsequent review.
