This role will be located in one of our three offices which observe a Hybrid work schedule (3 days in office):

As an Associate Underwriter, you'll be integral to the underwriting process. You'll collaborate with cross functional teams: Client Service, Claims, Risk Services and of course Underwriting. We'll trust you cover a territory and manage a multi-milion dollar renewal book of business in partnership with your assigned Underwriters. You'll also have the opportunity to make an impact as we tackle innovation projects focused on improving systems and process. Our business is growing rapidly so this position will be a front row seat enabling you to learn to become an Underwriter. You'll be part of a supportive team that helps one another when volumes peak allowing for their to be a healthy work / life balance.

You'll accept, retain and price standard to moderate commercial property and casualty insurance risks in accordance with established underwriting guidelines and within delegated authority level. You'll work closely with lead underwriters to achieve profitable growth objectives by properly classifying and pricing risks, and building strong relationships with agencies and your internal colleagues.

We'll count on you to:
  • Evaluate renewal commercial property/casualty risks and endorsements, within authority level, by examining business operations, classifications, contract forms, account information, claims experience, loss control surveys, financial reports, and risk acceptability.
  • Determine price in accordance with established underwriting guidelines and within delegated authority level. Prepare quotes or accepts and prices commercial property/casualty accounts that meet established risk selection criteria and are within the Underwriting Assistants assigned authority level.
  • Consult agents for additional information when necessary. Within authority, determines if account will be renewed or cancelled.
  • Develop and maintain professional, productive working relationships with agency force to encourage profitability, growth and good understanding of our Companys pricing and risk selection philosophy. Assists agents with questions regarding risk information and billing.
What you need to have:
  • Associates Degree; or two years related work experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Verbal and written communication skills to articulate clearly and concisely
  • Ability to analyze insurance risks to determine the degree of acceptability and pricing
  • Strong desk management skills, ability to multitask, independently organize work and prioritize competing demands and requests to complete tasks within required time constraints
  • Ability to travel occasionally in assigned territory
  • Customer service and teamwork oriented
  • Adept to fast-paced and changing environments
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and company business systems
What makes you stand out:

  • Intermediate knowledge of underwriting principles and policy forms
  • Demonstrates strong business acumen and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to evaluate and recommend solutions to work-related problems
  • Completion of or working toward AINS, AU or similar designation
